Historians believe the first settlers in Oak Grove arrived sometime in the mid-1800s. At the time, most of the surrounding area was covered in prairies and oak trees, prompting settlers to give the area the name “Oak Grove.” Some of the earlier settlers of Oak Grove were of German and Scandinavian descent. Their influence remains today in the many German and Swedish businesses comprising the town’s sizable commercial district. Taking a step back in time, one of the most notable events in Oak Grove is the Burning of the Oak Grove Creamery. The Creamery was built in 1892 to give local dairy farmers a place to store their goods. Unfortunately, a fire in the Creamery in 1902 destroyed the entire building and a barn adjacent to it. While the Creamery no longer stands today, its history of it lives on, and the townspeople of Oak Grove still remember the tragic event and hold the Ash Wednesday festivities in its remembrance each year.
